ICE Evening LectureThe Basics of Bridge Engineering Day/Date: Tuesday 14th August 2018Time: 6.30 PM to 8:00 PM Venue: Bahrain Society of EngineersOverview2018 marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Institution of Civil Engineers. To celebrate ICE is running a year of events and activities that show how civil engineering has for over 200 years transformed the way we live. Basics of Bridge Engineering is intended to provide non-bridge engineers with an insight of bridges, their types, classification by their functionality and construction. The presentation will highlight different types of bridge construction forms and the salient design principles applicable to all bridge types. Real life examples including bridges built in Bahrain will be discussed. The presentation is tailored to suit graduate engineers or practising engineers with limited experience in bridges. It is intended to bridge the knowledge gap between bridge engineers and their colleagues ranging from technicians to project directors.Speaker’s BiographyWalid has more than 20 years’ experience in bridge engineering split between the UK, the Middle East and South East Asia. Walid joined SSH in 2014 where he created the bridge design discipline. Since then, he is the head of bridges having successfully built the bridge design capabilities and delivered a number of bridge projects. Prior to joining SSH, Walid was employed by Mott MacDonald in the UAE. He was involved in large road and railway projects delivering structures design packages. Walid was also the Project Manager for the design of the landmark steel arch bridges on the prestigious Al Raha Beach Development in Abu Dhabi. When based in the UK working for leading consultancies, Walid’s skill base was developed for the design of steel bridges. This was supplemented by significant research which resulted in published papers on complex behaviour of half-through bridges and on landmark steel arch bridges. Since moving to the Middle East in 2007, Walid’s experience has been focussed on concrete bridges of all types.Walid is a Chartered Member of the UK’s Institution of Civil Engineers. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) and a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from the UK. In parallel to his full time employment, Walid is currently undertaking PhD research on a part time basis investigating the aerodynamic behaviour of super long span cable supported bridges.
